This original mixed media sketch was inspired by a trip to Cinque Terre in Italy a few years ago, and more specifically by the colorful village of Riomaggiore. I couldn’t resist this view with its bright red house, warm yellow buildings, rocky coastline and turquoise water. It has exactly the kind of colour and character I love to sketch.
After coming back from Italy, I made several versions of this view, and this one became one of my favourites. The sketch combines loose urban sketching lines with rich watercolor washes and coloured pencil textures, giving the scene a lively, sunlit feel.
